End to End Tolling Solutions

Full EETS-Compliant OBU

The OBU will provide a base software component (BSW) and an application software component (ASW). The BSW represents a hardware abstraction layer for the ASW, providing access to the hardware resources.

End-to-end solution around fully EETS-compliant OBU

In modern commercial vehicles, software as well as electronic and electric architecture (E/E) is taking over tasks from dedicated hardware units. Continental’s Distributed Tolling Solution makes use of the existing On-Board Equipment (OBE) for the tolling of the future. Ath the core is the smart tachograph which delivers precise GNSS sensor data and also contains a DSRC modem that can also be used for tolling purposes. Making the smart tachograph one of the main components of a distributed OBE solution significantly improves security level and manipulation safety. And even for exchanging the data with the Continental Tolling Proxy Cloud, the smart tachograph can be brought online through the plug-and-play solution VDO Link.

The benefits of a Distributed Tolling Solution

  • Future-safe and expandable solution
  • Increased quality and simpler logistics
  • Reduced costs
  • Increased security
  • Ready for the EU Mobility Package

Technical Overview of the Distributed Tolling Solution

Telematic and Tolling Device as Plugin for DTCO

Picture of the front of a VDO Link plug-and-play dongle in the forefront and another one in the background stuck on the smart tachograph DTCO 4.1.

The VDO Link closes the gap between smart tachographs and online platforms for fleet management. The plug-and-play solution is the first of its kind, allowing tachograph data to be retrieved and processed in real-time from a distance – without the need for permanently installed telematics modules in the vehicle.

Thanks to its open interface concept, the tachograph data can be used also for tolling and other use scenarios and value-added services.

Features of the VDO Link

  • Plug-and-play solution by using DTCO front connector
  • HMI: 2LEDs for diagnostics. Tolling HMI via DTCO 4.1 display, buttons and buzzer
  • High sensitivity multi GNSS receiver. GPS / Galileo /   GLONASS / BeiDou. Assisted GNSS
  • LTE CAT M1/2G module with internal antenna
  • For tolling: Use of DTCO internal DSRC
  • HSM: Integrated security module for high end security concept
  • Possibility to update software and firmware over the air
  • Backup battery for supporting peak current in 2G and for necessary operation after plug off
  • eSIM
  • Device consists of main body and adaptor

  • Secure debug interfaces
  • Secure boot, secure update
  • Secure Key and certificate storage
  • Secure cloud communication
  • Crypto-Accelerator
  • PKI infrastructure
