April 5, 2023 - Continental is on its course to achieving 100 percent carbon neutrality along the entire value chain. In this pursuit, Continental has been auditing and recognizing all its manufacturing plants across the globe on sustainability practices and awarding the Green Plant Label certification. The label distinguishes Continental locations with outstanding energy and environmental performance.
The front-running locations that have achieved a gold certification are Regensburg, Germany, and Bangalore, India. These two locations are the first among the 58 Automotive locations worldwide to be awarded.
"By achieving GPL Gold, Regensburg, and Bangalore are making a major contribution to our long-term sustainability goal - worldwide CO2-neutral production. The Automotive Group Sector is setting itself ambitious goals here. By 2025, a further 15 plants are to follow and achieve GPL Gold status," says Christoph Hagedorn, Head of Automotive Operations.
The Green Plant Label evaluates criteria such as energy efficiency, water consumption, emission control, waste and recycling management, and innovations in the research and development (R&D) space. All Automotive locations are committed to being Green Plant Label certified by 2030.
“It is our well-established tool in Automotive to provide systematic guidance for the locations including organizational, technical, and process-related topics. Together with our building solutions strategy for greenfields and new buildings, it builds an integrated approach for our Automotive production and office footprint,” says Peter Gruen, Head of Strategic Footprint & Realization Automotive Manufacturing.
With the Green Plant Label, Continental Automotive is working on developing a holistic approach to ensure that our locations become more sustainable and energy efficient with a clear target to achieve Carbon Neutrality in Scope 1 & 2 but also start to consider Scope 3.

The label distinguishes Continental locations with outstanding energy and environmental performance. The topic of sustainability is viewed holistically. The focus is on the areas of energy efficiency, water consumption, waste and recycling management, environmental emissions, and consideration of the CO2 footprint in product development. Additionally, the commitment of the employees is also included in the evaluation of the Green Plant Label criteria. With the help of training courses, events, and our own energy scouts in the company, awareness is created, and sustainability is more and more rooted in the DNA.
